It is so uselessly nerve-wracking watching the floods in Queensland and being able to do nothing at all about it. My sister has patiently explained that the Tweed (where her house is) is high but not flooding, my niece is in Laos and nephew in Sydney, so they are not particularly concerned that their house in West End in Brisbane is cut off and possibly very damp, but who can watch the footage of water like an express train carrying cars, trees and houses without feeling helpless and overwhelmed?

Add news of other senseless deaths and 2011 seems to have started on a sombre note, it feels almost irresponsible to be safe, happy and warm – which I know is silly! It is Melville’s Universal Thump all right.
and Monty Python of course…

I need to do something practical, to assert my membership of the human race.

It is difficult to comprehend isn’t it?!

I’m so sorry Tricia Rose but am consoled that your family is OK.
Sorry I haven’t been by much but I do miss you :)
I’ve had the feeling that you’ve been a very busy bee… am I right?

  3. Agreed… the scale of it is very hard to wrap my head around.

Funnily enough, I read your blog and live right by the Tweed River. I can assure you your sister is telling the truth and we are safely away from the flood zone. Despite being a bit short of milk, fruit and veg this week, and a bit long on cane toads and bugs seeking refuge inside the house, we have zero to complain about. Now to figure out how best to help.

It does leave one feeling useless. Of course kindness is always useful to cheer the spirit in such conditions. I just read last night that superstorms are expected for California and floods like weve never seen.

I wanted to let you know that the flowers under the window of Sea Cottage are those pale pink camillas.
