Raccoon Gift

Despite the inconveniences – muddy footprints on my white fence, the gradual conversion of my water-lily pot to salt/silt because they wash their hands there, garden depredations – I rather like living in close proximity to raccoons.  They live in little caves under the boulders in my spare lot, down close to the water, but they do rampage under the house as well, I can hear them chirruping to each other.  At any rate I prefer them to the skunk who created her nest under my office…

I can’t blame them for picking our delicious grapes, and we had a bumper crop anyway so there were plenty to go around.

I have to pick my figs early and ripen them on windowsills but this year there might be a youngster because he has insisted on biting every single fig within his reach, green or not.

So I have trimmed the lower branches to stop him climbing quite so easily, and the bonus is I have fresh greenery complete with fruit, to display inside the house, just like in the very best magazines.  There are bite marks to be sure – I’ll think of them as adding plot.

I was on a bike ride at dusk last night and came upon a family of raccoons coming up from a drainage hole in the road. So cute, but such little rascals! And I didn’t know you had a fig tree… I’ve been thinking about them because I just had the loveliest salad of figs with arugula and a honey-balsamic dressing. I’m going to try to recreate it this weekend.
