A War Bride’s Trousseau

I have only now had the time to examine the linens Cissy and George gave me over a week ago, from his mother, and they are treasures – two long plain linen tablecloths, with her monogram, a double linen sheet with a household monogram on the corner, and two embroidered and monogrammed cotton pillow slips, plus assorted table linens.

It strikes me all over again how much bigger the continental linens are than their British counterparts. This sheet I can use, my grandmother’s, I can’t. Hildegarde was a German war bride.
